Tucked away at 434 Sixth Ave. in the West Village is the Locavore Variety Store, run by the “shop local” queen Caroline Weaver. This charming shop is all about supporting local businesses and changing the way New Yorkers shop. Since its opening a year ago, the Locavore has become a go-to spot for unique, locally made products sourced within a 100-mile radius of the city.
The shop boasts a colorful decor and quirky displays showcasing 700 products from over 130 regional makers. From household essentials like cleaning supplies and kitchen utensils to pantry staples like green goodies from Eddie’s Pickles in Queens, the Locavore offers a wide range of items. One of the highlights is the unusual notions and gifts, such as cigarette lighters made with Dum Dum gum wrappers by comedian Amy Sedaris.
Weaver’s passion for supporting small businesses is evident in every aspect of the store, from the carefully curated selection of products to the friendly atmosphere she creates. She believes that shopping should be a fun and engaging experience, encouraging customers to explore their neighborhoods and discover something new. With a focus on storytelling and community, the Locavore aims to show people the value of shopping local and connecting with the makers behind the products.
