Renell Medrano is a photographer and artist who believes in new beginnings. Her solo exhibition, “Lambón,” is set to open at WSA in New York City. This marks the first time in over five years that her artwork will be showcased in her hometown. In collaboration with WeTransfer and Water Street Projects, Medrano’s exhibition celebrates the diverse body of work she has created in recent years.
The exhibition features raw and captivating portraits of prominent figures in the fashion and music industries, such as Kendall Jenner, Tracee Ellis Ross, Venus and Serena Williams, and Kendrick Lamar. “Lambón” also pays homage to the Bronx, where Medrano was born and raised, and the Dominican Republic, her family’s place of origin. For Medrano, this showcase represents a culmination of her achievements and sets the stage for the next chapter in her career.
While “Lambón” translates to “moocher” or “freeloader” in Dominican slang, Medrano interprets it in a more abstract manner for her exhibition. She aims to reveal familiar places and people in their purest form, offering unseen perspectives to the audience. Through this project, Medrano hopes to share unique expressions with the world.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Medrano discusses the inspiration behind “Lambón” and how her Bronx upbringing continues to influence her creative process. She emphasizes the importance of showcasing diverse perspectives, especially those that are often overlooked or misrepresented.
The exhibition teaser video focuses on the Bronx, highlighting the impact of Medrano’s Dominican and Bronx roots on her artistry. She draws inspiration from her childhood summers in the Dominican Republic and the vibrant culture she experienced there. Additionally, Medrano views the Bronx as a symbol of strength and possibility, citing notable figures like Ralph Lauren and Kerry Washington who hail from the borough.
When curating her exhibition, Medrano selects photographs that capture the essence of the people and places she has encountered. Each image is meant to showcase the richness and diversity of her experiences, inviting viewers to appreciate the true form of her subjects.
Looking ahead, Medrano remains focused on expanding her creative work and pushing the boundaries of what is possible for artists like her. While she keeps her future projects under wraps to preserve their energy, she is committed to challenging perceptions and inspiring others through her art.
“Lambón” will be open to the public for free at WSA New York from October 4 through November 2, 2024. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Renell Medrano’s world through this captivating exhibition.
