Swiper, no swiping
A North Carolina woman, Marin Blake, was out having a blast with her friends at The Rose Honky Tonk bar in Charlotte’s South End when the unthinkable happened — her phone got snatched. It’s a nightmare scenario for many, as losing your phone can be a real downer, especially in a busy place like a bar.
Marin Blake shared her scary experience with WBTV, expressing how unsettling it is to have something stolen from you. She emphasized the importance of staying alert and safe in such situations because, well, you never know what might happen. The strip of bars where Blake and her friends were hanging out has gained a reputation for attracting phone thieves, and unfortunately, she fell victim to one of them.
Using Apple’s ‘Find My’ feature, Blake managed to track down her phone, only to discover that it had traveled far and wide. From Charlotte to Miami to Shenzhen, China, her phone had quite the journey. But the scariest part? The thieves who took her phone started sending threatening messages, attempting to extort her. Despite getting a new phone, Blake found herself dealing with the aftermath of her stolen device, with the culprits still on the loose.
Phone theft isn’t just a problem in North Carolina — it happens everywhere, even in the bustling city of NYC. In early 2024, a brazen thief on a bike was on the prowl, snatching phones left and right in Manhattan. From Union Square Park to the Upper East Side, this menace struck fear into the hearts of residents, with the police scrambling to catch him. The phone-snatching spree continued, leaving victims in its wake, as the thief remained at large, evading capture.
