This summer, I had the opportunity to tour Florida to promote my new novel, State of Paradise. As a native of Florida, it was a meaningful experience for me to engage with readers in the state where I grew up. My book features a side character inspired by Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, whose policies have sparked controversy and challenges to literature in the state.
In 2022, DeSantis signed a bill allowing anyone to challenge books in public school libraries, leading to the removal of works by prominent authors. This has created a hostile environment for education, art, and free expression in Florida. Teachers and librarians face confusion and fear due to the “Don’t say gay” laws and book bans in the state. Public libraries have also been targeted, with thousands of titles facing restrictions or removal.
Despite these challenges, independent bookstores in Florida are fighting back against book bans. Stores like Tombolo Books and the Lynx are actively promoting literature and organizing events to support banned and challenged books. Florida’s rich literary tradition is being celebrated through book clubs and community reading festivals, showcasing the diverse voices of Florida authors.
The book tour in Florida was a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting local bookstores and defending the right to free expression. Authors and readers in Florida are coming together to preserve the state’s vibrant literary culture and push back against censorship. The tour highlighted the resilience and creativity of Florida’s literary community, proving that the state is a place where art thrives despite challenges.
As my tour came to an end, driving through the Florida landscape with my mom, I reflected on the deep connection between art and the state. Florida has always been a place of inspiration and creativity, despite the obstacles it faces. The events and conversations during the tour reinforced my belief that Florida is a place worth fighting for, where stories have the power to inspire change and bring communities together. The journey through Florida’s bookstores and literary scene was a testament to the resilience and spirit of the state’s cultural heritage.
