Professor Jimmy Choo’s JCA/London Fashion Academy recently celebrated a significant milestone by hosting its first undergraduate show. The event showcased the work of nine young designers from the Design, Branding, and Entrepreneurship cohort at the Hanover Square campus in Mayfair. These designers, who joined the academy on its opening day in September 2021, have spent the last three years developing their own independent brands while receiving training in both design skills and business education.
The JCA prides itself on its unique approach, which combines vocational design skills with a focus on business education. The goal is to equip designers with a comprehensive skill set that will enable them to succeed in the fashion industry after graduation. Each designer presented six looks from their debut collections during the show, offering a glimpse of their creative vision and unique style.
Maisy Binns kicked off the show with her label, Moocha, which blurs the lines between art and fashion. Inspired by her background in art and graphic design, Binns’ collection features bold prints, bright colors, and a strong appreciation for nature. Vesela Valeva followed with her womenswear brand that celebrates Bulgarian folklore through a contemporary lens, with a focus on crochet detailing.
Jasmin Woodward presented her luxe sustainable womenswear brand, Jasmin by Jasmin, which draws inspiration from ‘it’ girls and warmer climates. Niamh Nowlan showcased her womenswear brand, Nowlan by Niamh, which redefines British heritage luxury fashion with a focus on strong, confident women. Sophie Hollands introduced 08may, a unisex ready-to-wear label that emphasizes size adaptability, sustainability, and slow production practices.
Eliz Djafer’s eponymous label is inspired by nightlife and emphasizes authenticity, inclusivity, and sustainability. Alexis Iznyon’s socially responsible brand, Juniper, focuses on the balance between lifestyle principles and environmental responsibility. Savannah Griffin’s Cserephel label offers demi-couture pieces inspired by pre-war fashion and Baroque art, meant to be passed down through generations.
The show concluded with Nona Cunningham’s Nona Assisi brand, which features womenswear made from sustainably sourced materials. Each designer brought a unique perspective and style to the runway, showcasing the diverse talent nurtured by the JCA/London Fashion Academy.
The event was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the graduating cohort, who have spent the last three years honing their craft and developing their brands. As they embark on their journey into the fashion industry, they carry with them the skills and knowledge imparted by the academy, setting them up for success in their future careers. The show was not just a display of fashion, but a celebration of creativity, innovation, and the next generation of designers making their mark on the industry.
