A Warning to Dog Owners: Salmonella Contaminated Dog Food Recall
In a recent development that has dog owners on high alert, Blue Ridge Beef has issued a recall for thousands of 2 lb Natural Mix logs after a salmonella contamination was discovered. This recall, announced on January 31, comes in response to positive samples found during testing at the North Carolina Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Protection Laboratory.
The affected product, the 2 lb Natural Mix logs, is a popular item sold in retail stores as a “meal base, supplement, or topper” for dogs. This cuisine, which contains beef, green tripe, beef heart, and beef liver, is typically stored frozen and then thawed in the refrigerator prior to serving. It is crucial for pet owners to check items purchased between January 3 and January 24 of this year for the lot number Lot # N25/12/31 and the UPC# 854298001054, which identifies the recalled product.
The recall, which affects a total of 6,000 pounds of the product, is concentrated in just over 25% of the states where the mix is sold. The impacted states include Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, and Rhode Island. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cautioned that both pets and humans may be at risk of salmonella exposure, as individuals could come into contact with the bacteria while handling the contaminated food.
According to the FDA, individuals who have had contact with the affected product should monitor themselves for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In severe cases, salmonella infection can lead to serious health issues including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. If any of these symptoms manifest after handling the product, consumers are advised to seek medical attention promptly.
Additionally, pet owners are advised to be vigilant for signs of salmonella infection in their furry companions. Symptoms in pets may include lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected animals, even if they appear otherwise healthy, can act as carriers and transmit the infection to other animals or humans.
In light of the recall, consumers are strongly encouraged to return the affected product to the store of purchase or dispose of it in a manner that prevents access by children, pets, or wildlife. It is crucial to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both pets and humans in the face of this potential health risk. If pets exhibit any concerning symptoms, prompt veterinary care is recommended to address the situation effectively.
As the recall unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety for both our beloved pets and ourselves. Stay informed, stay cautious, and prioritize the well-being of your furry companions to ensure their health and happiness.
