California and the Western U.S. are currently facing a record-breaking heatwave that shows no signs of letting up anytime soon. The National Weather Service has issued heat warnings for many areas, describing the situation as a “seemingly never-ending heat wave.” The extreme temperatures have already proven to be deadly in some cases, prompting officials to urge the public to take the heat seriously.

Several locations have experienced their highest temperatures or most sustained heat levels ever recorded since the National Weather Service began collecting data. Barstow tied its all-time high temperature at 118 degrees on both Monday and Sunday. Palmdale and Lancaster have seen a record fifth consecutive day of temperatures at or above 110 degrees, surpassing previous records. Lancaster hit 115 degrees on Sunday, tying its all-time high.

Las Vegas broke its record high temperature by reaching 120 degrees on Sunday, the hottest temperature recorded since recordkeeping began in 1937. The city is also expected to break its all-time record for consecutive days with temperatures at or above 110 degrees. Other locations such as Bishop, Humboldt County, and Mendocino County have also experienced record-breaking temperatures during this heatwave.

In addition to all-time highs, many areas have set daily records for the highest temperature recorded on specific days. Death Valley reached 128 degrees on July 6, Red Bluff hit 118 degrees, and Barstow-Daggett Airport recorded 117 degrees, among others. Las Vegas hit 120 degrees on July 7, and Needles reached 123 degrees on July 8, setting new records for those dates.

As the heatwave continues to scorch California and the Western U.S., it is essential for people to take precautions to stay safe and cool. Stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and seek shelter in air-conditioned spaces if possible. It is crucial to listen to local authorities and follow any guidelines or warnings issued during this unprecedented heatwave. Stay safe and take care of yourself and others during this challenging time.
