Prom Memories: A Walk Down Memory Lane

Back in the day, like over 15 years ago, prom was a whole new world in my hometown of London. I mean, my only references were those American teen movies that I binge-watched, like 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All That. But hey, I was all about that GLAMOUR life! So, when my mom came back from Atlanta with this white, blinged-out dress that screamed “J.Lo on a budget,” I was living for it. The bias fishtail skirt was something else, and even though my style has evolved since then, I still hold a special place in my heart for that dress. It’s probably why I’m always rooting for the glam girls on the red carpet, like Salma Hayek or Beyoncé. They just speak to that hidden glam queen inside of me!

Fast forward to my graduation, and all I wanted was a designer prom dress. Forget the jewelry or watches, give me that high-end fashion any day! I fell in love with this Boho floral-print number from Roberto Cavalli’s Spring 2005 collection, and let me tell you, it was a look. Pairing it with some chunky wood bangles, I felt like a fashion goddess. And even though I haven’t worn it again, that dress is a treasure in my closet, waiting for my future daughter to rock it one day. It may have been a bit extra for a high school prom, but hey, fashion is all about taking risks, right?

Now, let’s talk about my senior prom back in 2009. I was on a mission to find a dress that no one else would have, so I hit up the best vintage store in South Florida. And there it was, the champagne sequined Vicky Tiel dress from the ’80s. It was love at first sight, even though it cost me a pretty penny (well, actually all my savings… like $500). I had to get it altered to fit, but man, that dress was worth it. Fast forward to today, and while the dress may not zip up anymore, I found a similar version online for a steal. So now I’m the proud owner of two of these beauties. Gala invite, anyone?

Wrapping up my prom dress saga, let’s talk about that moment when I learned to trust my gut in fashion choices. Picture this: me at the Nicole Miller store, torn between a stunning black gown and a vibrant red dress. I took a leap of faith and went with the red gown, and let me tell you, it was the best decision ever. The ruching, the halter neck, the criss-cross back—pure perfection. Looking back, I still stand by my choice to go bold with color. Fashion risks are what make life exciting, right?
