The 2024 U.S. election cycle has come to a close, with projections pointing towards Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris. However, amidst the division in the country, there are some positive stories to highlight from Election Day. Several politicians have made history by becoming notable firsts in their respective offices.

Delaware has elected the first openly trans person to Congress, Sarah McBride. McBride ran on a platform focusing on health care access, reproductive justice, and workers’ rights. Winning nearly 58 percent of the vote, McBride defeated her Republican opponent, John Whalen III. She expressed gratitude to Delaware for the support and emphasized the importance of protecting reproductive freedom, paid leave, affordable child care, housing, and health care for all.

In another historic moment, Maryland’s Angela Alsobrooks and Delaware’s Lisa Blunt Rochester will be the first two Black women to simultaneously serve in the U.S. Senate. Prior to their victories, only 12 Black people had been elected to the Senate, with three being Black women. The duo has expressed admiration for each other and aims to work together to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

New Jersey has voted for its first Korean-American Senator, Democrat Andy Kim. With 53 percent of the vote, Kim is set to become the first-ever Korean-American senator. As a son of immigrants and a public school kid, Kim expressed deep humility and gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the Senate.

Tulsa, Oklahoma has elected its first Black mayor, Democrat Monroe Nichols. Nichols, who won by a significant margin, delivered his acceptance speech in front of photos of Black Wall Street, emphasizing his commitment to leading the city towards greatness.

Kentucky’s Supreme Court will have its first Black woman on the bench with the election of Pamela Goodwine. Goodwine has a history of breaking barriers, having been the first Black woman to serve as a district and circuit judge in Lexington, as well as the first Black woman on the Kentucky Court of Appeals. In her acceptance speech, Goodwine highlighted her commitment to impartiality and the rule of law.

These historic wins in the 2024 Election highlight the progress being made towards diversity and representation in political offices across the country. As these politicians take on their new roles, they carry the hopes and dreams of those they represent, working towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all Americans.
