Gemma Hillier’s Battle with a Brain Tumor
In September 2023, Gemma Hillier, a 45-year-old teacher from Northampton, went for a routine eye test at her local optician. Little did she know that this visit would lead to a life-changing discovery.
A Shocking Diagnosis
During the eye test, Gemma struggled to read the letters in front of her, a stark contrast to her previously good vision. Concerned, her optician referred her to an eye clinic for further testing. In November 2023, an MRI scan revealed the unimaginable – Gemma had a brain tumor.
A Journey to Recovery
In February 2024, Gemma underwent surgery at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford to remove 90% of the tumor, which was wrapped around her optic nerve. The surgery was a success, but it marked the beginning of a long road to recovery for Gemma.
Living with Uncertainty
Gemma’s tumor was identified as a grade 2 meningioma, requiring regular scans to monitor its growth.
