In the world of fashion, Black designers have always played a significant role, influencing trends and styles that have become iconic. However, despite their immense contributions, Black designers are still underrepresented in the industry. Only 7.3% of designers in America are Black, facing systemic barriers and racial disparities that make it challenging for new designers to establish themselves.

To support emerging Black designers, McDonald’s USA has launched the ‘Black and Positively Golden Change of Fashion’ program. This program aims to provide resources and mentorship to five rising Black designers who are on the verge of making a mark in the industry. The designers participating in this program are Durrell Dupard, Shareef Mosby, Larissa Muehleder, Heart Roberts, and Nia Thomas.

Throughout their journey in the program, these designers will receive mentorship from experienced industry professionals, attend masterclasses, and have the opportunity to showcase their designs on large platforms. They will also be creating two merch lines, including a capsule collection set to launch in 2025.

During September’s New York Fashion Week, these designers had the opportunity to showcase their work at various events, including a Meet and Greet at the iconic Times Square McDonald’s store, a pop-up shop and short film premiere at the Black & Positively Golden Change of Fashion Symposium, and a reception hosted by the Black Excellence Brunch. McDonald’s also partnered with luxury design house LaQuan Smith to provide a week-long apprenticeship for the designers and be the official late-night food sponsor at his inaugural runway show afterparty.

Nia Thomas, one of the designers in the program, focuses on creating powerful designs using eco-conscious fabrics. She is paired with retail executive and buyer Shawn Howell, whose mentorship will help propel her brand to new heights. Shareef Mosby, known for his unconventional designs that blend avant-garde with streetwear, is working with industry trailblazer Elaine Welteroth to achieve lasting success in the fashion industry.

Heart Roberts, a designer who believes in breaking rules in fashion, is paired with Sherri McMullen, a luxury retail store CEO with a commitment to uplifting Black designers. Larissa Muehleder, whose worldly perspective influences her designs, is mentored by Jacqueline Cooper, the COO of Laquan Smith, known for her strategic prowess in the fashion industry. Durrell Dupard, inspired by his family’s crafting traditions, is guided by Justina McKee, CEO of Matte Collection, who provides support and expertise as he navigates the industry.
